Thomomys talpoides ‘Northern Pocket Gopher’ is an underground dwelling myopic rodent that is continuously tunneling. A pocket gopher can is capable of turning over 16 tons of soil every year. These are a male and female that came from Fish Creek Provincial Park and destroyed a number of plants in my garden in the fall of 2003 and spring 2004. These are solitary animals and only tolerate each other in the breeding season, April and May. After trying several means to get rid of these pesky rodents I finally resorted to pocket gopher traps which caught them on two successive nights. These gophers are mistakenly referred to as moles. There are no moles in Alberta.
